I promised early in the week I’d explain what I’ve been up to that caused me to gaffe and miss an update (which, I assure you, still genuinely pains me). Here’s the news: I have a new day job starting in late February, and I’m gearing up for a big move. A move from western New York state to Massachusetts. The Framingham area, near Boston, to be more specific.

What does that mean for Odori Park? In truth, really very little (which is part of the whole point of putting a comic up on the Web; it doesn’t matter where you and I are in the world, as long as we both have a net connection), but there are two likely impacts:

  1. I’m probably going to miss another update or two, particularly in the climax of the move, before this is all over (but, by the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth, I’ll aim to prevent it).
  2. I will need to make some new comic-making friends! Are you a comicker or a reader out near Boston? Care to shoot me a line? I would honestly love to make your acquaintance.

One more thing to consider is that Boston and environs have a lot more comic shows and events going on throughout the year than Rochester, NY. I am, for example, pretty keen on the idea of finally checking out the New England Webcomics Weekend. So there’s that to look forward to.

And that’s the long and the short of it. Mostly a non-event for you on the other side of the screen, but things’ll be hoppin’ over here for the next few weeks! Hope to hear from some of you in the MetroWest and Boston areas!

Thank you to everyone who has shared their good wishes for our big move to Massachusetts! As I feared, this move has consumed every waking moment the past several days. We’re at our new home in Mass. now, as of just a couple days ago–although the rest of our stuff won’t arrive for another couple days. Then I can get my studio back together, my computer reconnected to the Internet, and my life back to normal enough to start posting comics again! In the meantime, thanks for your patience and good thoughts. So far, all is going as much to plan as total chaos can. :)

Fun news! I’ll be teaching comics and cartooning in a series of workshops and classes at the >Hopkinton Center for the Arts in central Massachusetts, starting next Saturday, the 16th! Here’s a run-down (please sign up your favorite youngun’!)

Nov. 16, 2-5pm, Making Comics! For grades 4-8
Nov. 30, 2-5pm, Making Comics! For grades 9-12
The low-down: Comic books, manga, and comic strips are all about telling stories with words and pictures. Get a crash course in inventing fun characters, how comic panels work, and the tricks you can play with them. We’ll learn about how to spin an exciting tale and the basics of drawing people, monsters, heroes and villains with simple shapes and lines, and you’ll make a mini-comic of your own! (The older grades will get a similar program with a bit more sophistication on storytelling and character.)

Dec. 5 through Jan. 23, Thursdays 6:30-7:30pm, Cartooning & Comics, For grades 4-8
Come learn how to put the exciting ideas in your head on paper. We’ll start with how to draw fun cartoon characters and the worlds they live in using techniques like building figures up out of basic shapes, and making drawings that look 3D with foreshortening and simple perspective tricks. We’ll explore what makes a great character design by looking at how our favorite characters are made, and we’ll learn how to create mood and emotion with facial expressions and body language. At the close of the class, we’ll dip into telling stories with pictures by making comic strips and a mini-comic book.
