The drawing I’ve posted in place of this week’s comic is something I did for my uncle, Charles Watkins, a couple weeks ago. It’s a memory I have of a time he shared some of his skill in cartooning with me, knowing that it’d fan my creative flames a little. I didn’t have nearly as much time with my uncle as I’d have liked, but I had enough to know he cared about me, and my creativity, and wanted to see it always growing.

My Uncle Charles has just passed away (cancer is a rotten thing), but I had this picture, and thought about how he might like it if I shared it with other folks. I think he liked to share his curiosity and creativity with others. As a teacher, he did that for a lot of kids. I know he did for my buddy, Al, who–as chance would have it–had my uncle as a teacher in fourth grade, and counts the literary spark my uncle lit in him as a defining part of his childhood.

If you think about it, next time you have a chance, it’d be a nice thing to give a younger person you know a little nudge of support for something they’re reading, or drawing, or trying to make. Help fan their flames a bit. Maybe just ask to see something they’ve created, or tell them how great it is that they’re making things at all. I think my uncle would like that. You never can tell how much a little moment will mean to someone in the long run.

Awww man… sorry to hear about that, Chris. But a REALLY nice memorial strip for your uncle, though!

You uncle would be definitely proud of what you have done.

  4. Chris

Thank you, both, for the kind thoughts.

Whenever someone tells me they’ve recently lost someone that was connected to them in some way… I always reflect on how we spend the first half of our lives getting to know the people around us and the second half, saying goodbye to them! It all comes and goes so quickly, so savor the moments that matter!

Well said, Jynksie. Best we can do, I guess, is to try and shift the needle on that scale.

Aw, this was a very good post. Taking a few minutes and actual effort to generate a good article… but what can I say… I hesitate a whole lot and never seem to get nearly anything done.

    Thanks for the sentiment :)
