Odori Park, by Chris Watkins Odori Park - Blog

Today is my birthday.
Last month was Odori Park’s birthday.
I let it fly by simply because I haven’t had the time to give a proper little celebration.
A blog post is hardly a surprise party with balloons and a magician, but it’s better than nothing.
So, please allow me to supplant hoorahs over my own birthday (which, as I continue to age, feels simultaneously less desirable, but more worthy as an accomplishment–I’m still alive!) with hoorahs over the fourth birthday of Odori Park on the Web! By my quick rough count, that’s over 600 comics I’ve posted online since the first one in March of 2009. That feels pretty good!

A couple weeks ago I got myself a new phone–a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (or, as colleagues refer to it, my “what-the-heck-is-that-it’s-HUGE!-aren’t-you-embarrassed-to-use-that-as-a-phone?”). I chose this particular model largely because it has a Wacom-powered pen. I grabbed a copy of Layer Paint (great little drawing app for $2.99, though I wish the screen would rotate), with visions of drawing comics over my lunch hour or at random traffic stops. I put it through some paces tonight, so…

Here’s a birthday sketch for you to say thank you for reading!

    Hey man…
Happy birthday to a fellow Chris!
Supposedly, one of my belated birthday gifts is being delivered today - an iPhone 4s. I’ve been using a small Samsung Galaxy Exhibit 4G. It’s a good phone but was getting really funky and inconsistent at various conventions I would go to so hopefully, the iPhone will be a lot better.

I’m a Mac guy (except when I’m at work - then i turn into a PC werewolf) so I already have the 1st generation iPad that’s good for some digitally sketching if i wanted to do that. Mainly, I just use it to play Angry Birds and check Facebook & e-mail when I’m on the road. :-D

  2. Chris

    Thank you, Chris!
I was starting to have the same sort of issues with my HTC Evo 4G. Worst was when it would lock up and restart itself while I was using GPS in the middle of a drive. Not to mention that the Sprint network coverage in my new home area stunk.
Let me know what you think of the new iPhone! If you haven’t checked it out already, try the Paper app and see what you think!
(Angry Birds! We’re an Angry Birds family.)

Chris, sorry I missed your milestone fourth anniversary! Super congratulations!! 600 strips and counting, just an amazing feat! You deserve to sit back and drink a Kirin, wish I could join you!

  4. Vince

Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary! 600 strips is great on any level. But at the quality you’ve been cranking out, truly amazing and inspiring. Keep up the fantastic work! -v

    Happy birthday/anniversary/new digital toys, Chris!

  6. Chris

I’d tell ya yer getting old, but I’m the one holding the door open as you get there. I’ve been there for awhile now! I need to sit down! [grin]

So, Happy BIRTHDAY! [say it like Frosty!] …when it comes to technology, if its more advanced than a cave wall, a stick and some blood from the latest kill, I shoo it off my lawn! Congrats on 600 strips in a mere 4 years!

  8. Chris

Thanks, Scott! Here’s a 21 joint balm saulte!
