Haven’t checked this comic in a while, but looking a few comics back it looked to me like they were only referring to art class, rather than art in and of itself, and I can think of any number of good reasons the class might be low value (maybe the kid just isn’t interested right now, maybe the teacher isn’t very good, maybe the kid does have artistic interests/talents but they lie in other directions, maybe the class is really easy to catch up on, etc.).
